The Deepwater Convergence

Hook
Once every eleven years, under a rare astral event called the Deepwater Convergence, the magical pressures beneath the Black Lake recede. For a single night, a vast underwater vault opens—a remnant of ancient Hogwarts founders, carved into the bedrock beneath the lake.
The Merfolk, guardians of the vault, allow only a few select students to enter—chosen by song.
It’s not a challenge of who is strongest, but who is clever, brave, and respectful of the deep’s magic.
The event is formalized at Hogwarts as a schoolwide tradition: The Deep Trial.
Entry Mechanics
- Students selected must stand at the edge of the lake at moonrise.
- The Merfolk Chorus swims in formation and sings an ancient, harmonic selection spell.
- Each PC must succeed on a Charisma (Performance or Persuasion) DC 14 to "resonate" with the song.
- Failing doesn't bar entry, but the Merfolk assign disadvantage on one check within the vault ("The Lake remembers your doubt.")
Underwater Mechanics
- All chosen participants are given a Pearl of Tides (1 hour of underwater breathing and pressure resistance).
- Light is extremely limited—magical light sources glow only half as far.
- Spells with fire or verbal components require a DC 10 Concentration check to cast due to pressure and distortion.
The Vault (Quick Overview)
Puzzle Room
- Rearranging coral-covered runes into a flowing current pattern.
- Arcana or Nature DC 15
Combat Room
- 2 × Merrow Guardians (reflavored as ancient aquatic constructs)
- 1 × Swarm of Magical Jellyfish (use Swarm of Insects stat block with lightning damage)
Final Chamber
- A glowing Mercrystal Monolith—the Merfolk surround it in song.
- The vault chooses one treasure, based on how the party behaved throughout.
Reward
Reskinned Item: Sapphire Band of the Lakeborn (based on 2024 Ring of Elemental Command: Water)
Effect (abridged):
- Grants resistance to cold damage and underwater breathing at will
- While attuned, once per long rest, you may:
- Cast Wall of Water or Control Water
- Gain swim speed equal to twice your walking speed
- Charm a CR 2 or lower aquatic creature for 1 hour (save DC 15)
Flavor:
Worn only by those the Merfolk name “Friend of the Depth.” It hums softly near lakes and glows faintly during storms.

All students within 60 ft must make a Wisdom (Insight) check DC 12
- Success: Gain advantage on one check in the vault
- Failure: Experience a brief illusion of their greatest fear while underwater (flavor only, or minor effect)
