The Restricted Section Heist

Challenge Type: Skill Challenge or Series of Encounters
Goal: Infiltrate the Restricted Section, gather forbidden knowledge, and escape undetected.

Entry

The Restricted Section is secured with magical chains and ancient wards.

  • Bypass Check: DC 14 Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) or Intelligence (Arcana)
  • Advantages:
    • Mage Hand to unlock from a distance
    • Disguise Self to impersonate staff
    • Bribing or persuading the Fat Friar (Charisma DC 13)
    • Distraction spells (e.g., Minor Illusion)

Stealth Navigation

Once inside, patrolling sentry magic sweeps through the aisles at irregular intervals.

  • Each PC: DC 13 Dexterity (Stealth) each time a patrol passes
  • Failure: Triggers an encounter with a magical defense (DM's choice)

Magical Obstacles

Many shelves are warded with protective enchantments.

  • Detecting Wards: DC 15 Arcana or Investigation
  • Failure to detect: Triggers a trap (see below)
  • Books with red-gilded bindings or whispering covers are especially dangerous

Trap: The Whispering Booktrap

Trigger: Opening the book without the proper counter-ritual
Detection: DC 15 Arcana

Effect: Releases a swarm of magical whispers

  • All creatures within 15 ft. must make a DC 13 Wisdom Saving Throw
  • Failure: Become Frightened for 1 minute as the book whispers their worst fears

Personalized Whisper Effects

Caoimhe Keelan

“The light will go, little flame… and you’ll be alone, like before. Just like she promised to keep it secret. But it’s not a secret here. Everyone will know. Even your friends. Even him.”
(Edges of your vision darken. A mocking laugh coils through your chest.)

Finlay Figgins

“No one remembers you, Finlay. They won’t—not when it matters. The names are written, but yours… yours fades. Always the shadow at the back of the room. Even your Boggart turned away.”
(A chill spreads across your skin as if your presence is unraveling.)

Otto Noxley

“All that work. All those scrolls. None of it mattered. You’ll still fail, Otto. Fail, and they’ll leave. No friends in failure. Just silence. Just shadows.”
(A red X flashes across your best parchment. Cold seeps into your fingers.)

Exit Strategy

To avoid triggering the Librarian’s Lament (an alarm spell effect):

  • Group Stealth Check: DC 12
  • Alternatives:
    • Use illusion magic or Invisibility
    • Use Pass Without Trace or equivalent
    • Distraction (e.g., toppled books, conjured noise)

Narrative Hook: The Fleeing Student

As you enter:

Footsteps. A shape jerks upright at the far end of the aisle, knocking over an inkwell. A cloak swishes—someone bolts deeper into the stacks and vanishes.

Clues

  • Perception DC 20: You catch a flash of red hair. It was definitely a student.
  • Perception DC 10: An open book lies on the desk, ink spreading across its margins.
    • Chapter Title: “The Tower of Severance and the Scribe’s Library Below.”

This student has found something connected to the hidden depths of Hogwarts—something you're now entangled in.
